In a recent assembly, Bellarmine entertained a celebrity guest speaker: the past baby-sitter of the professional Football-Person Russel Wilson! The sitter, who knew Russel from a young age and oversaw several hours of his early childhood, gave an instructional speech before the entire Bellarmine community about the clapping game "pattycake," the same game, the sitter claims, that she once played with Russel Wilson. "You have to clap a whole bunch to play pattycake," she informed the school. "Just like how you have to clap a whole lot when Russel Wilson makes a good play! Oh! Did I mention that he and I go way back?"
As she explained to her Wednesday-morning audience however, there is more to the game than simply clapping. "You have to clap sometimes, but you also have to have a partner. And then that partner claps sometimes, but then sometimes you have to do a high-five kinda clap with your partner. Oh, and you have to do it to a little song as well." After an explanation of the complicated system of hand-clapping, the speaker had students pair up to practice. While few students succeeded in a perfect pattycake game, they learned quickly. As the much-esteemed guest speaker commented "you guys did really well for your first try! Rus, sorry, I mean Russel Wilson (it's easy for me to forget that he is famous, because I know him so well) took a little while to learn the game." The retired sitter also talked about their relationship with Russel, and how she inspired his career. "People give Russel a lot of credit for his ability as a football player," she told an engrossed crowd, "but few people realize the impact that his babysitter, who helped him to master pattycake, had on his career."
Student reactions were highly positive of course, with many expressing their gratitude for the speaker who got them out of time that would have otherwise been spent in a dull Community Period environment. Many students were also inspired by the speakers words. One student praises the speech saying the best part was "when she told us about how Russel Wilson quickly mastered the game. Now that I know how to play pattycake pretty good, I'll bet I can be the next Russel Wilson!"
