Opinion: Graduation is NOT the End

At today's graduation ceremony, the Bellarmine community honored the exceptional accomplishments of the Class of 2018 as they prepare to move on to the next stage of their educational journeys. Tears were shed in this time of endings and departures, but were these tears really necessary? Many students see graduation as the end of something, it doesn't have to be. Though your memories will fade over the course of the summer, and you will inevitably drift apart from the friends that you held so dear, and while nothing can replace the sensation of entering the A-building on a sunny day, you will never lose the opportunity to give Bellarmine large sums of hard-earned money.
Four years of paying tuition is such a short time, and so few students truly savor the experience during their time at Bellarmine, as it is often the parents who spend this money. Fortunately, alumni will still have the option not only of paying their future children's tuition, but of contributing to the school through fundraisers and private donations. Likewise, many graduates are sure to look back fondly on those dollars they spent at the cafeteria, blind to the fact that the X-group would probably let anyone who happened to walk in buy some of their soggy salad in a desperate attempt to turn a profit on their contract. What is more, students often forget that entirely new opportunities to spend money on the Hill have opened up for them. Though some seniors had the opportunity to buy their own raffle tickets this year, most will not have that opportunity until next fall's Pride Auction.
As such, our advice to you here at the Hyena is to never give up. Your life will undergo a lot of changes over the next few years, but you will always have opportunities to do your part, even if it is something small like stopping by a football game without an ASB card, or stopping by the Lion's den. Work hard, follow your dreams, and remember that there is always a place for you in the Bellarmine community if you make a generous annual donation.
