Bellarmine Students and Faculty alike both know well that Bellarmine is a Catholic School in the Jesuit Tradition guided by the five principles of "Graduate at Graduation," or Grad at Grad for short. This philosophy traditionally consists of five principles. Those being that Bellarmine graduates should be Intellectually Competent (meaning that they should graduate by graduation), Religious (meaning that they go to mass), Open to Growth (meaning that they go to mass even if they used to not go to mass), Loving (meaning that they go to mass with their friends) and Committed to Justice (meaning that they have passed Service and Justice).
Today, this ancient tradition of Jesuit of Education underwent a surprise overhaul, the most notable change being revealed when high-ranking Jesuits introduced a sixth principle of Grad at Grad: Committed to Grad at Grad. In a change many are calling a "long overdue" Jesuit schools will now ensure that their students are fully aware of the now six principles of Grad at Grad. As a spokesperson for the Society of Jesus told The Hyena "The Grad at Grad principles do not serve Jesuit schools if the rich relatives of students are not aware that our schools transform their money into moral growth for their children." Graduates are now responsible for knowing about, and being able to advertise the merits of their Jesuit Education. In response, Bellarmine religion teachers have already pledged to double the amount of essays assigned about the Grad at Grad, though other departments are still debating the appropriate curriculum changes.
Other changes to the Grad at Grad principles are more minor, but include the following:
- Intellectually Competent: You now only have to graduate within a year of graduation.
- Religious: You are only required to be 87.5% as religious as you were previously.
- Committed to Justice: You no longer have to pass Service and Justice.
How these changes will affect the day-to-day Bellarmine experience has yet to be seen, but what is clear, is that Bellarmine will never be quite the same again.
