College Applications Loom Over Senior Class

Attention all seniors, AP Elitist Smartasses and College Prep dumbos, the time has come. College applications have begun. In the coming months, our lives––passions, likes, dislikes, fond memories, deeply personal wounds––will all be reduced to under a thousand words, sent electronically to your schools of choice via the Common Application.

This is the moment you've worked your whole life for. After seventeen years of living, this is what you have to show for it. Every night slaving away copying somebody else's math assignments, has led to this moment. Every weekend involuntarily volunteering for Nativity House, has led to this moment. We've all thought of those wasted opportunities. One regretful senior, crying, felt obligated to voice his regrets, "Back in 5th grade, I skipped my math homework to go bike riding with friends outside. Now Harvard is a reach school for me." Maybe bad parenting is at fault, but the simple truth remains––that if you've prioritized having fun in life over getting into a prestigious college, you're doing it very, very, wrong.

Say you're not an athlete, nor have you developed an extensive list of extra-curricular involvement, well, chances are, you're worthless. No one will ever love you because you didn't join ASB sophomore year. No one will ever love you because you decided being a part of FBLA or Model UN wasn't for you. No one will ever love you because you decided to quit soccer after not fitting in with the team. The college application basically determines if God loves you. It's no wonder atheism is on the rise among seniors this fall.

But for the students among us, who you know, are actually worth somethings in life, their time has come. Let's just say they won't be wearing grey sweatpants anytime soon. Egos will balloon for some, hopeless depression will set in for others, rightfully so. At the end of the day, history is written by the winners. And if you don't get into your dream school, are you really winning?
